TheTrendril Anthology Series is an a defining fixture in Cumulus Press' publishing program, placing the apprenticeship of young writers — 24 years and under — as an integral part of our priorities. The series’ innovative book design, which includes a distinct but inseparable chapbook by established and respected authors, embodies its raison d’être: To provide a device for the mentorship of emerging writers from all cultures across Canada.

Inspiration for The Trestle Chapbook of early unpublished work by known and respected authors came after receiving George Elliott Clarke’s limited edition Execution Poems (Gaspereau Press, 2000). Its oversized format, designed precisely to suit the poetry between its covers, led us to rethink the series’ purpose, develop a more accommodating design with the introduction of the chapbook. But how would we include the saddle-stitch chapbook within a perfect-bound volume? To avoid sublimation of the emerging writers’ works, the publication of the senior writer needs to be separate from, but still integrated into, each book. The chapbook — set aside within the French flaps of the front cover seems an ideal location to isolate the mentoring work in a format commonly embraced by the novice. SUBMISSION INFO
